DANIEL PHILPOTT The latest in modern social networking has focused enormous attention on the crimes of Joseph Kony. But the peace-making resources of ancient religious and tribal traditions offer the only way to heal the wounds he has inflicted. Kony 2012 and the politics of retribution Over the past six weeks, the world (almost literally) has witnessed the phenomenon of Kony 2012, the internet video that has now garnered over 100 million hits.  The video’s creator, Invisible Children, deserves credit for this remarkable feat of activism for social justice and indeed for drawing wide…

CHRISTIAN WLASCHÜTZ In Peacebuilding: Catholic Theology, Ethics, and Praxis (Maryknoll, 2010) as well as in his forthcoming book, Just and Unjust Peace: An Ethic of Political Reconciliation (Oxford University Press, 2012), Daniel Philpott addresses the issues of transitional justice from a political perspective on reconciliation. He, like others, emphasizes the objective of restoring relationships that were harmed by injustice. This restoration includes all members of the community and not only victims and perpetrators. Political reconciliation in six difficult (but necessary) steps Philpott…

    16 Apr 2012 | 9:48 am
CHRISTIAN WLASCHÜTZ I am further drawn to reflect on the insights of Peacebuilding: Catholic Theology, Ethics, and Praxis when I think of another conflict zone in the Magdalena Medio region, the southern part of the department of Bolivar. This zone is characterized by vast gold resources that have attracted several armed actors: traditionally the ELN guerrilla and, from the 1990s, the paramilitary forces. Reintegration and its discontents The villages I have in mind served as military bases for the paramilitary units commanded by Macaco, a notorious drug-lord, who was recently condemned to…

CHRISTIAN WLASCHÜTZ In an environment that can be described as “hot” in every sense, it is refreshing to find a volume that combines the relevance and scholarly sophistication of Peacebuilding: Catholic Theology, Ethics, and Praxis (Maryknoll, 2010), edited by Robert Schreiter, Scott Appleby, and Gerard Powers. In a series of three posts, I reflect on this significant set of essays in light of my own peacebuilding work in Colombia under the auspices of the Development and Peace Program. Of course, this work has been significantly affected — and buffeted — by the decade-long armed…

    10 Mar 2012 | 10:09 am
BRANDON VAIDYANATHAN In my previous post I examined some of the ways in which the Catholic Church in the Arabian Peninsula helps cultivate skills and competencies that enable its members to achieve successful economic outcomes. A second set of resources it offers could be called ideational resources — ideals, attitudes, beliefs, and values that have a long-standing, habitual nature because of their cultivation, whether intentional or unintentional, in various institutional settings. Here, the classic example of how ideas or values contribute to economic outcomes is Weber’s argument, in…

by Hyewon Yun, Korea Writer David Sedaris said that he felt like the “the lowest life form” while he was discussing on NPR his humiliating experiences of learning French in Paris. The statement might be extreme, but it does hold some truth. I worked as a translator back in Korea, and helped many English-speaking business people and professionals communicate with their Korean counterparts in mutual interactions.  My best efforts to change one language into another failed me sometimes because as foreigners, English speakers could not fully understand what was going on without a basic…

by Tara Lucian, USA Every fall and spring break the Center for Social Concerns hosts seminars throughout Appalachia, a region of the United States that surrounds the Appalachian Mountains and includes counties in 13 different states.  This region is one of the poorest in the United States, with some of the highest levels of unemployment and lowest levels of education.  The people you meet in Appalachia are usually very different than the people you will meet at Notre Dame; they have different backgrounds, expectations for the future, and perspectives on life.  There are some similarities…

We have endless cloudy days and are always expecting the precious blue sky. It’s so exciting to have plenty of sunshine here! In addition, Chengdu is said to be a city that “teaches you how to waste your time correctly” and “you never want to leave once you come.” It is a place with a slow and pleasant pace, resulting in satisfaction about life. At Notre Dame, I live in Lewis Hall and I find it a…

by Tanya Alconcel, Hawaii, U.S.A Leaving my home state of Hawaii to come to Notre Dame was the biggest culture shock of my life, which isn’t something you might expect since Hawaii is still part of the U.S.  But the environment, the people, and the culture at Notre Dame was completely different from island life.  Although it was extremely disconcerting at first, I think it was my curiosity and excitement of being in a new place, experiencing a new culture, and meeting new people, that helped me overcome my initial fear and thrive in this new environment.  I stepped out of my comfort zone…

Having participated in FASO’s signature event, Fiestang Filipino (see this interview from my freshman year ), the entire time that I’ve been an undergrad, it was a bittersweet experience taking my final bow at the Stepan Center this past Saturday. I look back at the last four iterations and manifestations of the annual dinner-dance/culture show/party, and remember the great effort and exposure it means for both Filipinos and lovers of Filipino culture at the University. The themes have changed (2011  and 2012 , for example) and the particular personalities and challenges…

On Saturday, March 31 I presented and attended a colloquium (E-Reading: A Colloquium at the University of Toronto) on the topic of e-reading, and I am documenting the experience because writing — the other half of reading — literally transcends space and time. In a sentence, my Toronto experience feed my body, my heart, and my mind. Sponsored by a number of groups (The Collaborative Program in Book History and Print Culture, the Toronto Centre for the Book, the Toronto Review of Books, and Massey College) the event was divided into three sections: 1) E-Reader Response, 2) The…

    29 Mar 2012 | 3:43 pm
This posting summarizes the purpose, process, and technical infrastructure behind the Catholic Youth Literature Project. In a few sentences, the purpose was two-fold: 1) to enable students to learn what it meant to be Catholic during the 19th century, and 2) to teach students the value of reading “closely” as well as from a “distance”. The process of implementing the Project required the time and skills of a diverse set of individuals. The technical infrastructure is built on a large set of open source software, and the interface is far from perfect. Purpose The…

This is sort of like a travelogue — a description of what I learned by attending a workshop here at Notre Dame on the topic of emotional intelligence. In a sentence, emotional intelligence begins with self-awareness, moves through self-management to control impulses, continues with social awareness and the ability to sense the emotions of others, and matures with relationship management used to inspire and manage conflict. This morning I had my last Wednesday workout session at Knollwood with my early morning workout buddies and Kellie the instructor.  I started to take it easy this week and not push as hard as I have been for the last several weeks. I need to rest up a bit but still need to exercise to keep my body strong. The group came out and signed the van when we finished this morning!  The van looks terrific.  Brittany and Tim at AgencyND did a fabulous job with the design. Well, I am on my last leg of heavy workouts. Yesterday, Kellie trained me with this 100-90-80….10 reps exercise – 100 squat jumps, 90 sit ups, 80 squats with weights, 70 pull ups (brutal), and so on.  I had some trouble waking up today, as I could not lift my arms from all of the pull-ups. Bright and early this morning, Tom trained me.  I was in bungee cords running up a hill while he pulled me back – pretty intense.  I started off the morning with a run, 2 hours of spinning, 30 minutes of intense training with Tom, and then Piloxing with Jessica.  I am not sure what…

My workouts at Knollwood Country Club with Kellie have been pretty strenuous. I know I’ll be grateful for them when I head up the really difficult leg of this summer’s trip, the Rocky Mountains. Usually I start workouts at 4:30 or 5:00 a.m. – carrying weights up a hill, running down, sprinting up, and so forth. Some days, it does not seem to end. Other workouts involve weights and step-ups – and step-ups – and more step-ups. To top it off, we do the exercises in the pool area, which simulates the hot, humid summer days we will face when we bike across Utah and Nevada.  It’s…

Today at Knollwood Country Club (KCC), I worked on indoor spinning with a big group that showed up bright and early in the morning.  The instructor, Greg, had us do different types of interval training on the bike.  We always watch Tour de France movies to help motivate us during class – climbing, speed trails, and fast downhills often make being on a stationary bike more bearable.  It is great to have such supportive friends at KCC. It’s amazing what spinning – some people call it studio cycling – can do for you. If you have never spun before on a static bike, this is a great way…

infographic via hackcollege.com I’ve been thinking a lot about mobile recently. Maybe it was the redesign of nd.edu. Maybe it was recent 2012 Notre Dame Mobile Summit. But I think it’s more of the fact that I can’t be anywhere without my cell. Seriously, when it’s on the charger I’m lost. I don’t know what to do. Marketing Over Coffee - John Wall and Chris Penn The old way of doing SEO – keywords, meta description, proper URL set-up, etc… which you can find all about on seomoz.org is great and you should be doing it but it’s not enough anymore. If you listen to the guys at Marketing Over Coffee (Christopher S. Penn and John Wall – love these guys), they are saying it’s not enough anymore. You need to have social as part of the mix. You need a network of people that will spread your message along. The other interesting tidbit is how Google is changing search for more…

I recently met with a gentleman from Linkedin who was interested in helping the university advertise on the business social network. Personally, I’m a big fan of Linkedin. I think it’s how a lot of business networking gets done because you can do it at any time. Instead of cold calling companies, you can reach out through the people you know who might know someone working at the company. You can also find out a lot about a company. That’s why we have our Linkedin presence for the University of Notre Dame. But the problem is that we can’t list out every great…

The Gathering Storm Thus far, I’ve avoided following much of the drama in the Ruby and Rails community. The Rails community prides itself on opinionated software, which naturally lends itself to drama. During DHH’s keynote at Railsconf 2012, it felt to me that he was attempting to draw fire away from the other members of the Rails core. Regardless of intention, I believe he has it right. Let the creator of Rails, our flag bearer, be the lightning rod. During the Rails Panel session, one of the attendees asked about the Github issues count. At the time, there were 840 open issues. That is…

Two weeks ago, the end of life for Ruby 1.8.7 was announced.  This affects several of the applications that I work on – in particular Conductor.  About a year and a half ago, I began the process of updating Conductor to Ruby 1.9, but the update was less than smooth.  There were several libraries that I was dependent on that were not yet updated. I would love to have helped update several of these libraries, but my time is finite, and I’ve gotta keep the trains running. So I waited.  And this past week, I decided it was time.  I spent about three days running my tests and fixing…

For example, there was a long paragraph (200 words or so), and the word “condition” was split into “condit ion” – a strange problem but one related to a previously discovered limitation in the venerable yet pervasive sendmail program which we used for delivering the emails. The Challenge Sendmail splits long lines after the 998th character.  It does this by adding a carriage return (like hitting…

Maybe it's because the arguments for the banning were built entirely of straw-men. T. Boone Pickens would clearly throw his money around to other non-revenue sports without…
